Question Exploration

How does a device become a routine?

How can CERs support Higher Order Thinking?

Resource Use

Caveats for using the Devices

Purpose

The purpose of the provided devices is to give teachers a starting point or a way to jumpstart their thinking when creating a Unit Organizer or other Content Enhancement Device for their class.

Warning

As each district has its own pacing guides, the samples provided may not align with the order in which you are asked to teach each standard.  It is also one teacher's approach to the content based on the needs of their students. The devices will give you an idea of where to start, but you will need to examine the standards and any documents used for planning to customize the device with your critical content.

Using the devices in instruction

Please remember that the devices become powerful when used with the Cue-Do-Review instructional sequence.  Completed devices should never be handed out to students.  Learning and student buy-in occur when content is co-constructed on the device with students and the devices are used routinely throughout instruction.

The Content Enhancement Approach: The Only Tier 1 Instructional Approach with a Progammatic Line of Research Demonstrating that All Students Learn - Schumaker

2019 SIMposium

interested in research on student learning? teacher learning? Jean Schumaker will be discussing just that at this year’s SIMposium.  Jean and Joe Fisher have recently written an article reviewing several Content Enhancement studies focusing on four of the Content Enhancement Routines. The studies fall into two categories: those focusing solely on student learning, and those focusing on teacher and student learning.  In this session, the research from two new studies will be described, the whole group of studies will be reviewed, and the results will be shared. Participants will receive a list of the Content Enhancement research articles plus results tables, and be better able to discuss the research on Content Enhancement Routines with administrators.

What have 35 Years of CER Research Taught Us? - Schumaker, Lenz

2021 SIMposium

Watch Video

Jean Schumaker and Joe Fisher have reviewed thirty-five years of research on four Content Enhancement Routines. This session will summarize their findings and describe the elements that are critical when designing online or live professional development for teachers about the routines. A variety of PD structures will be shared for online instruction of teachers. Participants will discuss the elements of PD that they have found to be successful in online PD instruction.

Some Routine Rules for Shrinking and Expanding CE Devices (01:13:21)I - Lenz

2013 SIM Conference

VIDEO LINK
Over the past 30 years, we have had hundreds of questions about whether it was ok to change the physical format of the devices included in the CER guidebooks. Textbook authors have sent us examples of completed and uncompleted devices asking for permission to include them in their textbooks. Many SIM professional developers have called about various digital alterations as well as the use and distribution of renegade CER devices. The increasing use and popularity of GIST has also made the modification of CER devices even easier. In this session, we want to share with you: (a) a variety of adaptations and changes that we have made in CER devices over the years, (b) some general guidelines that we have tried to follow as we have finalized the final device designs that ultimately made it into the guidebooks, (c) the research that we are aware of that supports some of our decisions, and (d) show you some changes to some of the current CER devices that have been proposed to respond to how CER is being used with the common core standards, embedded strategy instruction, and requests from SIM PDers to respond to real world teaching challenges. We encourage you to bring examples of device changes and extensions that you have found useful or bring samples that were total failures, so we can give homage to the power of learning from nonexamples!

Background Knowledge, Vocabulary & CE: How They Intertwine & Where SIM Can Bridge Research & Practice (01:09:07) -

VIDEO

Sue Woodruff,  2005 SIM Conference
Have you ever wondered exactly how a student's background knowledge fits into the overall picture of literacy? We hear about it all the time, and what is its relationship to vocabulary? Both background knowledge and vocabulary are essential components to a well-planned literacy initiative. How can SIM operationalize these critical concepts? This presentation is based on Robert Marzano's newest book, Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement: Research n What Works in Schools.
