2006 SIM Conference Most professional developers have encountered teachers who communicate quite clearly that they are not interested n whatever is being offered. Unfortunately, resistant teachers can spread their negative perspective and poison potentially successful professional learning opportunities. What should we do about teachers who don't want to work with us? During this presentation, participants will learn how the partnership principles, Prochaska's research on change, and Miller and Rollnick's Motivational Interviewing skills can assist professional developers with this significant challenge. Additionally, participants will review several short case studies and share their ideas on how to address difficult participants.

The Higher Order Thinking and Reasoning Routines (Teaching Cause and Effect, Scientific Argumentation, Teaching Decision Making, and Question Exploration) can be useful to content teachers working on building students higher order reasoning and thinking muscles, but they can also be used effectively to help them produce an essay in which they support their reasoning. Instructions are provided at the end of each guidebook for writing an essay. We will practice the practical aspects of writing that essay -useful to your teachers learning how to use these routines.

The instructional coaching process described in recent publications bears little resemblance to the coaching process first described in the 2007 book Instructional Coaching. In this interactive, hands-on session, participants will (a) learn how the model has been refined over the past decade, (b) practice applying instructional coaching skills to specific SIM™ Content Enhancement Routines and Learning Strategies, and (c) discuss how elements of the new instructional coaching process can be used to translate SIM research into effective teaching practices that change students’ lives. Attend this deep dive to learn about the SIM Math Strategies and how to present them to teachers.

Attendees will learn about general characteristics associated with the Strategic Math Series, including its use to build students’ conceptual understanding of numbers and operations while also building computational fluency. Attendees will take deep dives into the subtraction with regrouping and partial products manuals with guided practice and independent implementation activities during the session. Design and Implementation of Online Fusion Reading for Adolescents with Limited Reading Proficiency - Brasseur-Hock, Zhang

This presentation is to demonstrate the development of an online adaptive, comprehensive, and research-based adolescent reading program called Fusion Reading Program (FRP) that holds the potential to provide personalized learning for adolescents with limited reading proficiency. To respond to the sudden shift to online learning and teaching, we have collaborated with Fusion Reading (FR) leaders and teachers in redesigning FRP drawing upon the current science and theories of reading and online learning. In this presentation, we will describe how the online FRP integrates two core design components to better support students’ personalized learning needs. These components include 1) explicit and direct instruction and 2) Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Furthermore, we will demonstrate how we leverage varying functionalities of Canvas as the learning management system to design and deliver instructional units of the online FRP.

Learner Objectives: 

At the end of this session participants will:
Gain an understanding of which Fusion Reading critical teaching components were needed to impact teachers online instructional needs. Gain an understanding of effective design features of online learning using the framework of Universal Design for Learning to enhance the Fusion Reading program in an online format.

While you may not teach civics/government, you may know some innovative teachers who do and who may  be interested in field testing a very innovative instructional program… or possibly even becoming one of the co-authors. Thus, the purpose  of this session is set the stage for recruiting teachers to assist in the refinement and further development of the program.

The DVTs for Scaffolded Inquiry in Civics / Government program is designed for addressing “Essential Questions” associated with specific NCGS and NCSS-C3 content standards while also scaffolding the development of key language literacy skills (e.g., researching, evaluating, and synthesizing information, communicating findings through writing and oral presentations and arguments). 

The program features an integration of explicit instruction techniques with inquiry-based learning methods as a series of specialized visual tools (not your parents’ graphic organizers) are used during instruction.  The session will provide an overview of the program and its various instructional resources followed by a discussion about field testing opportunities.

During this session participants will learn about the partnership between Dubuque Community Schools and KUCRL to implement and sustain the Fusion Reading (FR) Program over the past 3 years. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about, how FR professional development and coaching model impacted teacher fidelity and student outcomes, and how the design of a Fusion Reading Academy has lead to sustainability. In addition, a brief overview of the Fusion Reading Program will be presented. Teachers and administrators involved in this effort will be present to share their experiences.

Approximately 200 students in grades 7-12 participated in group interviews in which they were asked to describe their perceptions of current CER implementation in their courses over a four-year period. Students were asked to define and describe: • what good and poor CER implementation looked like, • effective teaching practices, • good teaching. The data were used to explore answers to the questions: How do students describe good CER implementation? Do student descriptions of good CER implementation match KUCRL’s criteria for good implementation? Do 7th and 8th graders new to CER differ in their views of effective CER implementation from 11th and 12th graders who have experienced CER implementation across three to four years? What do students think as they move from a teacher perceived as a good CER implementer one who is perceived as a poor CER implementer? What do students say should be changed to make teaching devices more effective? What helps them learn? In this session, the results of the interview will be shared including the interview process. We will explore the implications of listening to the voice of the students and discuss the value of conducting student interviews, the use of student interview data to improve CER implementation, and the overall continuous school improvement process. Implications for the design of research, curriculum, and instructional technology will also be discussed if time permits.

This presentation will focus on using social skills instruction to help create an emotional safe and respectful classroom culture. Two programs will be reviewed: The SCORE Skills for Cooperative Groups and the Socially Wise Program. The SCORE Skills program is a class wide instructional program designed to teach fundamental skills to facilitate group interaction and enable students to work together pleasantly and productively. The Socially Wise Program is an interactive, multimedia CD that may be used to support social skills instruction class wide or to provide supplemental instruction to individuals. This program includes skills that are basic to communication, are important when dealing with authority figures and peers, and are typically listed as areas of skill deficits for youth with social-adjustment issues. This program features youth actors and includes interactive instructional lessons with vignettes of examples and non-examples of skills, interactive flash cards, mnemonic devices, quick quizzes, interactive modules and games, color graphics, animation, video segments, audio effects and descriptive text! We will examine what it takes to create a high-quality model of integrated devices and how to help teachers replicate these as part of their initial professional development experience. #e use of strategic enhancers, learning strategies, web links, assignments, and assessments with Content Enhancement devices will be presented and discussed. The Essay Test-Taking Strategy is designed to help students deal effectively with the complex test-taking demands of courses in school as well as the essay test-taking demands associated with state competency tests, including high stakes tests and college entrance exams. Students are taught to analyze the essay question, organize the information they know, write their answer with a specific structure and revise with edits to create a polished product. In this session, professional developers will learn how to provide instruction to the teachers using this manual with students.

Nationwide, students have challenges with content acquisition and critical thinking. Content Enhancement Routines are a powerful solution. The Higher Order Thinking and Reasoning (HOTR) Routines—Concept Comparison, Teaching Cause and Effect, Teaching Cross-Curricular Argumentation, Scientific Argumentation, Teaching Decision Making, and Question Exploration) —are useful to content teachers working on building students’ higher order reasoning and thinking skills and extending their understanding. Participants will engage in a dialogue about HOTR, provide feedback to the SIM HOTR Cadre of SIM Professional Developers working to expand the use of this cluster of CER, and explore new resources designed with this purpose in mind.

Please review these slidedownloads:  “Research & Development of Higher Order Thinking & Reasoning(HOTR) prior to the “Exploring Higher Order Thinking and Reasoning Routines” session.  This will provide an orientation to the session where many aspects of foundational thinking and planning for teaching Higher Order Thinking and Reasoning Routines (HOTR) will be explored. This set of slides is one of several that have been prepared to introduce you to a group of HOTR routines in the Content Enhancement series.  

 

These routines support teachers and students as they respond to standards calling for active engagement and use of higher order thinking and reasoning. These include making comparisons, determining causes and effects, making a decision, answering questions that explain main ideas, and engaging in argumentation. Several other sessions at this SIMposium explore the entire set of HOTR instructional routines and supplemental materials.
