2002 SIM Conference
The Question Exploration Routine is a package of instructional methods that teachers can use to help a diverse student population understand a body of content information by carefully answering a “critical question” to arrive at a main idea answer. As part of the routine, a visual device, the Question Exploration Guide, is developed with the students. In this process, students are guided in identifying key terms in a critical question and “unpacking” the large question in smaller questions. Students also are challenged to apply the main idea to complex content information and real-world use.

The focus of this presentation will be on an interactive multimedia (IM) program for teaching at-risk students social skills. Th e IM program provides self-paced instruc-tion in four social skills that provide to youth alternatives to behaviors that result in social problems (e.g., inappropri-ate behavior after formal and informal reprimands from authority fi gures; social isolation). The four skill lessons developed to date are Dealing with Critical Feedback, Coping with No, Accepting Advice, and Negotiation. Th ree new skills are in the fi nal stages of development and also will be discussed. Participants will have an opportunity to preview the programs on their laptop computers. Some laptops will be provided.

The results of a study conducted in two schools in two districts focusing on three units of recent U.S. history will be discussed. Samples of researcher-developed and teacher-developed Content Enhancement devices swill be shown. Results of teacher performance data and student performance data will be presented. Discussion of results in light of differing district coordinator support also will be shared.

This session will provide a picture of what RTI looks like in high school settings and how the SIM writing strategies can be incorporated into a whole-school initiative. Ninth grade English language arts teacher are central to providing Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction in writing with content teachers supporting generalization while special educators and English language learner teachers provide Tier 1,2, and 3 to students in special programs. Tier 3 instruction in high school is a challenge and a range of options will be described. Initial results of student improvement in writing will be shared.

This session will describe a model demonstration project to develop a whole-school instructional program for writing at the high school level. The curriculum plan for Sentence, Paragraph, and Theme Writing Strategy instruction will be shared along with efforts to implement Tiers 2 and 3 within an RtI model. Exciting results of criterion-based and standardized writing tests (the TOWL-4 and state writing competency test) will be presented for two high schools.
