Scenarios - Understanding Academic Language - Frances Ihle (00:59:47)
2015 SIM Conference -
VIDEO LINK
Understanding Academic Language is a learning strategy that can help students better comprehend content area textbooks. This strategy is needed because the writers of academic textbooks often use complex language structures that are very different from the everyday speech patterns with which students are familiar. Thus, many learners find academic text extremely difficult to understand. Built around the four-step TEXT Strategy, this manual provides a framework that teachers can use to convey this information. The six lessons outline the procedures for conducting the pretest and posttest, and the procedures and materials for teaching the TEXT Strategy. - Understanding Academic Language/Text Pattern Strategy - Frances Ihle, KUCRL (01:20:38)

A researcher and a practitioner collaborated to develop a new strategy designed to narrow the gap between text and reader. In this session, participants will learn about this strategy in the making, which teachers struggling readers how to decipher the language structures commonly present in content area textbooks. The presenter will share implementation data from a pilot and feedback from this session will guide further strategy development. - Unexplored Galaxies: Paragraph and Theme Writing - Schumaker 2010

Through use of the Unit Organizer Routine, teachers can "frame" a unit to enable students to understand the big picture of the unit. Use of the routine helps students understand how the unit fits within a course or sequence of units, see a method for organizing knowledge, define relationships among pieces of information, understand what they are expected to do, monitor their progress, and recognize what they have learned.

Emphasis this session will be upon the many uses of CE devices, including as writing supports. Results of recent research will illustrate how students can use a Question Exploration Guide to write five-paragraph essays according to the 6-Trait Writing analysis guidelines. Research also will indicate the challenges students have in responding to questions requiring written responses. In addition, participants will consider uses of the Concept Diagram, the Concept Comparison Table, and the Concept Anchoring Table in writing responses. Previous research on the value of CERs to support note-taking also will be presented. -

Come play with us! Through the Reason Racer game, students practice the skills of argumentation including making claims that are supported by evidence and solid reasoning. Via social media, students utilize these same skills in authentic and engaging environments. Argumentation, reflected in both the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards, is an essential component for developing critical thinking skills necessary for students, scientists and all citizens to understand the world around them. This session will share classroom-based activities from two projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Student and teacher resources support planning, implementation, and evaluation activities primarily for the intermediate, middle, and high school levels.

Effective evaluation can make or break implementation of a SIM program. Too frequently, educational leaders make decisions about programs such as SIM because student scores go up or down, without ever really knowing whether or not the program was the reason for the movement in students' scores. This highly interactive workshop will provide an opportunity for SIM PDers to explore all five of Guskey's levels of evaluation for professional development and to develop specific, practical methods for addressing them.

2021 SIMposium
This session will focus on the establishment, function, and change of one school’s leadership literacy team through the years. We will discuss the successes pre-pandemic and how the team has been a driving force for the school. Next, there were many adjustments and flexibility had to happen throughout this school year. Finally, we will address moving forward in how our team is helping to change our school culture and changes post-pandemic. Even though this will have a focus on a literacy leadership team, this can apply to ANY leadership team.
There are 2 different versions of our handout.
One is a PowerPoint slide
and the other is a Google slide.
