Come explore Wordsmith, WordSLEUTH, and Word Shop, three new software programs designed to build vocabulary-related knowledge and skills. Wordsmith is a fun computerized game show that teaches the meaning of common prefixes, suffixes, and root words. WordSLEUTH and Word Shop rely on animated characters and fun story lines to provide instruction on the Word Mapping and Vocabulary (LINCS) Strategy respectively. During this session, you will have an opportunity to play with the programs, learn about the research results, and discuss how to implement each program individually or as part of comprehensive vocabulary instruction.

The Following Instructions Together program was fi eld tested with approximately 200 students and was strongly endorsed by both teachers and students. The instructional methods will be described, and the research results will be discussed.

Forward Together: What is the Focus of KUCRL and the SIM Network for the Next Five Years? - Mike Hock

2021 SIMposium

The mission of the CRL is, in part, Creating Solutions to Educational Challenges. The mission is dynamic and creating solutions to educational challenges should reflect an understanding of today’s local challenges. Creating solutions to those challenges requires creative thinking that may move us beyond our current interventions and programs. The purpose of this session is to engage in an open-ended discussion of what educational challenges we face today and how might we creatively respond to those challenges. SIM Network professionals are often very close to the educational challenges and needs of practitioners and students. They can inform research and development efforts at the CRL. The SIM Network, together with CRL staff, can begin the task of identifying solutions to challenges that reflect today’s schools

Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing (Videos)  - Jim Knight, Jean Schumaker
2007 SIM Conferencee

Students who are able to identify and paraphrase main ideas and details are more likely to understand and remember what they read. Unfortunately, for many students, finding main ideas and details and paraphrasing are not easy tasks. The Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing is designed to provide the fundamentals students need to learn those important strategies. Fundamentals contains lessons on paraphrasing words, phrases, and sentences, as well as lessons on identifying main ideas and details in paragraphs and short essays. Professional developers who are looking for a step-by-step approach to increasing some important elements of reading comprehension should benefit from this presentation.
There were two sessions at the 2007 conference:
1. Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing Part A1(01:18:26) - Jim Knight, Jean Schumaker
1. Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing Part A2 (00:37:53)
2. Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing Part B1(01:18:32) - Jim Knight, Jean Schumaker
2. Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing Part B2(00:19:17) - Jim Knight, Jean Schumaker
