Overview of Mentor Responsibilities
The Mentor will need to:
- Support the apprentice in planning for the Overview presentation and Learning Strategy professional development.
- Provide opportunities for the apprentice to see other SIM PDers in action.
- Provide any assistance to the apprentice as needed.
- Critique the Overview and Learning Strategies Professional Development activities using the “Mentor Feedback Checklists.”
- Provide feedback and time for reflection with apprentice.
- Be supportive through the process. Although some of the work is about instructing and feedback, some of the work is about encouragement, support, and advisement.
- Review the completed portfolio PRIOR to submission for certification through the SIM Learning Strategies Professional Developer Badge (Links to an external site.) on www.BadgeList.com (Links to an external site.).
- LS Apprentice "To Do" Requirements

The LS apprentice is required to:
- Include and request support from their SIM Mentor when planning and preparing detailed agendas.
- Present portions or all of an Overview presentation and a Learning Strategy professional development.
- Build a portfolio including all the items outlined on the University of Kansas, Center for Research on Learning checklist of requirements (Links to an external site.).
- Submit materials in a timely fashion to their mentor for review. Share the completed portfolio PRIOR to submission for certification through the SIM Learning Strategies Professional Developer Badge (Links to an external site.) on BadgeList.com (Links to an external site.).
- Remember to thank your mentor!
- The Certification Process is complete when:

The certification process is complete when:
- The apprentice submits a complete portfolio to the KUCRL – SIM Professional Development Team by clicking “Request Feedback” on the SIM Learning Strategies Professional Developer Badge (Links to an external site.).
- The KUCRL – SIM Professional Development Team will work with a designated SIM Professional Development Leader to review and check the portfolio for quality and completeness. If additional information is needed, the apprentice and mentor will be notified.
- The designated SIM Professional Development Leader notifies the KUCRL – SIM Professional Development Team of the completion of the requirements for certification.
- KUCRL – SIM Professional Development Team will in turn notify the apprentice and mentor of the completion of the requirements for certification.
- The new SIM Professional Developer is presented a certificate at a state, regional, or international SIM Update Conference to celebrate this accomplishment.

Presentation Checklists-LS
There are several checklists that are used during the apprenticeship period. Each checklist can be found in this LS Mentor Feedback Checklist folder (Links to an external site.).
SIM Overview Presentation Checklist
The SIM Overview presentation checklist is to be completed by the SIM Mentor during the presentation, used to debrief the presentation experience with the apprentice afterwards, and included in the submitted institute portfolio. Note that the checklist does not need to be shared publicly on BadgeList.
SIM Overview Reflection Form
The SIM Overview reflection form is to be completed by the apprentice and shared during the debrief session with the SIM Mentor. This form should be submitted with the institute portfolio, but does not need to be posted in its entirety on BadgeList. Apprentice can post reflection statements on BadgeList that they are comfortable sharing publicly.
LS Specific PD Session Checklist
The LS Specific Presentation checklist is to be completed by the SIM Mentor during the LS Professional Development Session, used to debrief the PD experience with the apprentice afterwards, and included in the submitted institute portfolio. Note that the checklist does not need to be shared publicly on BadgeList.
LS Specific PD Session Reflection Form

Implementation, Model Stage, and Lesson Checklists
In addition to the above checklists, SIM Mentors are recommended to use the implementation checklists that fit varied purposes for LS instruction and modeling during PD sessions. These checklists can be found in SIMville on the Checklists page or under the specific LS. SIM Apprentices are encouraged to use these during PD sessions with participants as well.
